"Monsieur Tarnier" invented the couveuse (brooding hen), a prototype of the modern incubator, which he introduced at the Maternité in 1881. He was beloved for his heroic activities during the 1871 uprising of the Paris commune and his lifelong commitment to combating childbed fever in the maternity wards of Paris. The photograph is a composite of two views of the subject's pelvic skeleton showing significant degradation of bone structure.
